Before you can have a successful career in sales, you need to get a job in sales first. The good news is that there are plenty of sales jobs available right now. However, that doesn't mean that all of them are the right fit for you.

There are several things that you should think about before you apply for different sales positions. What industry is the company in? How do they handle sales?

It can be difficult to make sales for a product you don't understand or believe in. And since there are many sales jobs that pay commission only, it's important to think carefully before accepting a sales role.

Then you want to think about how you'll receive leads. Oftentimes, potential customers might ask your business for a consultation or you'll be asked to generate your own leads.

Once you have a job in sales that you feel suits you, then all you have to do is be successful at it. Every salesperson is different, so everyone is going to discover their own method that works for them. However, most find that these four things will get them started on a successful career.

Understand Your Customers
It's difficult to sell to people that you aren't connecting well with. And if you're an outside salesman going to people's homes, people tend to be on their guard.

You need to make yourself personable to your customer. Try to find something to talk about as an ice breaker. 

Listen carefully to your customers when you're working. What are they most concerned about? How can your product help them?

You and your customer are on the same side. What you need to do is get your customer to see that.

Be Knowledgeable About Your Product
Again, it's hard to sell a product that you don't know anything about. How can you teach your customers about your product? How do you answer customer questions?

While you're in training for your new sales position, don't be afraid to ask your own questions. If you don't understand something, then chances are you'll have a lot of customers that have the same question too. The more knowledge you have before you start selling to people, the better you'll look in the field.

That knowledge will give you more confidence when you speak to customers. It will also give you more tools to work with while persuading customers to buy your product. And no matter what the result of your sales pitch is, your customers will appreciate that you were able to educate them on your product.

But you should also always be honest. Don't try to lie when a customer asks you a question you don't know the answer to. Instead, direct them to someone who has the answer so you can both learn something new.

Don't Let Rejection Get You Down
No matter what industry you're selling for you're going to face a lot of rejections from customers. In some industries, you might see a lot more failures than you will successes. But you can't let that go to your head.

Most of the time, it's nothing personal against you. Sometimes your customer just doesn't have the money to buy your product. Maybe they just weren't ready to commit to purchasing from you that day.

The best thing you can do in these moments is to relax and move on to the next sale. You need to keep your confidence, or you won't make many sales at all. Many salesmen will agree that the moment you think that you've lost a sale is usually the moment that it becomes true.

So when a customer says no, just say thank you. Then tell yourself that you'll succeed the next time.

Ask For Referrals
Even if your job provides you with inbound leads, you should always be looking for potential sales on your own. One of the best ways to do that is to ask for referrals. 

Make this one of the last things you do during a sale. It's best to do it as you're leaving a successful sale. If your customer is pleased, then they should be more than willing to recommend you to their friends and family. These friends and family members should then be able to contact you directly to sell to them as well.

In a sense, this can create a sort of domino effect that will boost your sales career quickly. First one person likes your sales pitch and your product, so then someone they know also wants to participate in the product too. And if you're doing your job right, this cycle continues every time you make a successful sale.
